Lloyd H. Dean is President/Chief Executive Officer of Catholic Healthcare West (CHW), one of the leading not-for-profit healthcare systems in the United States. In this executive management role, Mr. Dean is responsible for $11 billion in assets and the overall management, strategy and direction of CHW’s integrated healthcare system comprising 41 acute-care hospitals, as well as medical clinics, home health organizations, two health plans, five medical practice groups, and an estimated 53,000 employees and 10,000 physicians in California, Arizona and Nevada.
Mr. Dean has proven skills in multi-hospital system leadership, cultural integration, financial turnarounds, system operations, service quality, business development and revenue growth. When Mr. Dean joined CHW in June 2000, the organization had gone through several years of steep annual operating losses. Today, CHW is fiscally sound, with a strong balance sheet and A-level credit ratings from all three major bond rating organizations; and two thirds of CHW hospitals are first or second in the markets they serve.
Mr. Dean is a passionate advocate for health reform and is widely recognized for his leadership at the community, state and national levels. Mr. Dean has a strong personal commitment to providing excellent healthcare, especially to the underserved, and to developing services and programs that enhance CHW’s ability to deliver on its mission and values of dignity, collaboration, justice, stewardship and excellence. He believes in the importance of collaboration with physicians, community partners, labor groups and governmental agencies and recognizes that the success of CHW is an expression of each employee’s contribution. He also believes that CHW’s role in community health and benefits is essential to continuing its healing ministry of ensuring healthcare for all.
Previously, Mr. Dean was executive vice president and chief operating officer of Advocate Health Care, a faith-based integrated healthcare delivery system in Oak Brook, IL. During his tenure, Advocate Health Care was named one of the nation’s Top 100 Integrated Networks by Modern Healthcare magazine. Prior to Advocate Health Care, Mr. Dean was with the Upjohn Company, where he held key executive and operational management positions for the company’s Health Care Services Division including national vice president of sales and executive vice president of marketing. He received the prestigious W.E. Upjohn Award for his management and operational excellence.
In 2004, Mr. Dean was appointed by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger to the California Commission for Jobs and Economic Growth.
In February 2006, Mr. Dean was appointed co-chair of San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom’s Universal Healthcare Council and in August 2006 co-chair of the Healthy San Francisco Program Advisory Committee.
Currently, he is chair of the Board of Trustees of the Catholic Health Association of the United States (CHA) where he oversees advocacy efforts for Catholic healthcare in the United States. He is also a member of the CHA board’s Executive Committee and recently served as the board’s Secretary/ Treasurer. Mr. Dean serves on the Board of Directors of Wells Fargo & Company and also serves on the Board of Directors of Mercy Housing, Inc. Additionally, Mr. Dean serves as the vice-chairman of the Board of Directors for the Bay Area Council.
Modern Healthcare magazine has named Mr. Dean one of the 100 Most Powerful People in Healthcare for 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008; and one of the Top 25 Minority Leaders in Healthcare for 2006, 2007 and 2008.
Mr. Dean is the recipient of the Partners in Care 2007 Mathies Award. In 2004, the 100 Black Men of the Bay Area, Inc. recognized him with the Community Service Award and in 2005, the 100 Black Men of the Bay Area Award. |

David Brailer

David J. Brailer, MD, PhD is Chairman of Health Evolution Partners. Dr. Brailer has sought to drive positive change in health care in his work as a physician, researcher, teacher, entrepreneur and policymaker. Dr. Brailer founded CareScience, Inc. and served as Chairman and CEO from inception, through its IPO, and until its sale in 2002. Under his leadership, CareScience led the market in development of care management, outcomes analysis and health information exchange. In 2004, Dr. Brailer was appointed by President George W. Bush as the first National Coordinator for Health Information Technology. In this role, Dr. Brailer developed and led the nation’s strategy for ushering health care into the digital era.
Dr. Brailer is committed to improving health care by discovering and funding health technologies and health service companies to the industry. Founded in 2007, Health Evolution Partners is investing in companies that may lead and become valuable in the new era of value-based, cost-effective, and consumer-driven health care.
Dr. Brailer earned his MD at West Virginia University, completed his internal medicine residency at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, and earned his PhD in health economics at The Wharton School. Dr. Brailer taught in Wharton’s MBA curriculum for ten years. |

Peter Maag

New Models for Innovation: Bringing Novel Diagnostics Solutions to Market
Peter Maag is Global Head, Diagnostics, for Novartis Vaccines and Diagnostics. With his depth of international experience, Peter
will head the continuous expansion and growth of the Diagnostics
business unit into new global markets.
Peter joined Novartis Vaccines and Diagnostics from his previous role as Country President Novartis Germany. In this position he was responsible for all operational and commercial activities of the Novartis Pharma business and he also oversaw Novartis group
activities in Germany between July, 2006 and December, 2008. During this time, Peter and his team launched 10 new Pharma
products into a rapidly changing health care environment.
After joining Novartis in 2001, Peter first served as the Global Head, Strategic Planning for Novartis Pharma AG, in Basel, Switzerland. In this role, he was a member of the Global Pharma Executive Committee, reporting to the CEO. In 2003, he set up the Infectious Diseases Franchise for Novartis. Subsequently, Peter was appointed as Country President in Korea and served in this
role for three years, building a strong team in a dynamic emerging growth market. Prior to joining Novartis, Peter worked at McKinsey & Company in New Jersey and Germany, focusing on pharmaceuticals and globalization strategies.
Peter studied pharmaceutical sciences in Heidelberg and London and received his Ph.D. in Healthcare Management from the University of Berlin, Germany. |
